Odalisque
'앵그르'를 비롯한 수많은 화가들에 의해서 그려졌던
방을 의미하는 터키어 '오다'에서 유래된 '오달리스크'란
터키황제 '술탄'의 잔시중을 들던 후궁 또는 여자 노예들을 말한다.
그들은 엄중한 감시와 금기의 장소인
'하렘'이라는 곳에서 기거를 했다.
아랍어로 '하렘'이란 신성한 지역을 뜻하는데
부녀자가 남편 외 다른 남자들과 마주치지 않고
일상 생활을 할 수 있도록 만든 공간이다.
처음 '술탄'의'하렘'은 궁정의 일부분으로
여성들이 거주하는 일종의 별관이였다.
이곳은 '술탄'의 생모가 거주하는 구역,
'술탄'의 부인들이 거주하는 구역,
'술탄'의 아들 딸들이 거주하는 세 구역으로 나뉘어져 있었다.
그러나 이 '술탄'의 가족들을 위한 거처였던 '하렘'이
후궁과 여자 노예들이 들어와 함께 살게 되면서 부터
또 다른 구역으로 변해가게 되었다.
