프란시스코 호세 데 고야 이 루시엔테스

(Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes, 1746년 3월 30일 - 1828년 4월 16일)

스페인의 대표적인 낭만주의 화가이다.

종교적인 그림과 초상화를 전문적으로 그렸던 그는 1799년 스페인의 왕궁화가로 발탁되었다.

파괴적이고 지극히 주관적인 느낌과 대담한 붓터치 등은 후세의 화가들에게 많은 영향을 끼쳤는데,

특히 에두아르 마네와 파블로 피카소를 들을 수 있다.

 

자크 루이 다비드와 동시대에 살았던 그는 당대의 유행에서 벗어나 인간 내면, 사회 풍자적인 그림을 주로 그렸다.

그는 스페인을 지배하던 프랑스와 민중을 억압하는 귀족에 대해 비판적이었다.

실례로 그의 작품 《5월 3일의 처형》은 나폴레옹의 프랑스 군대의 민간인 학살을 고발하는 작품이다.

그러나 그에게 있어서 왕실이 소장한 벨라스케스 작품에 접한 일은 새로운 경지를 개척하는 계기가 되었다.

고야는 벨라스케스에 다음 가는 빛에 대한 명수로서, 그때부터는 차례로 새로운 감각을 빛낸 초상화를 그려 냈다.

 

그는 1799년에는 궁정의 제1화가가 되고, 그 해부터 <카를로스 4세의 가족>을 제작하여 절묘한 명암의 깊이를 창조하고 있다.

<나체의 마하> <옷을 입은 마하>의 영묘함도 유명하다.

. 국정은 불안하고, 1808년에는 나폴레옹 군대가 침입했다. 그 때 민중의 학살이 감행되었는데

고야는 <5월 2일의 변>과 <5월 3일의 처형>(1814)으로 그 처참함을 묘사했다.

그러나 나폴레옹의 형이 국왕이 되면서부터 고야는 마드리드의 서쪽 '귀머거리의 집'에 은거하였다.

고야는 완전한 귀머거리가 되어 고생했으며, 그 집의 각방에는 '악마가 나의 자식을 잡아먹는다' 등

그 밖에 이상한 소재로 장식되어 있고, 그 묘사의 박력은 귀기를 보는 듯한 실감을 자아내고 있다.

그의 만년의 작품은 점점 흑색을 띠게 되며, 묘사는 일층 박력을 보여주고 있다.

나폴레옹이 몰락한 후 스페인 왕조가 부활했고, 고야는 요양을 이유로 프랑스로 떠나서 보르도에서 생애를 마쳤다.

고야는 공전의 판화의 명수로서, <로스 카프리초스>나 <전화> 등 연작으로 자유분방한 표현을 보여주고 있다.
